The Lakota-Nakota-Dakota (Sioux) Tribal Leaders of the Oyate (People)
The United Sioux Tribes Development Corporation is the oldest Lakota-Nakota-Dakota (Sioux) organization of the Great Plains Region.  We are a non-profit 501 (c) (3) tribal organization chartered by the Chairmen, Presidents and Chairpersons of all 11 Sioux Tribes in North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska.  Our tribal organization is dated to 1952, when federal and state termination laws were passed.  On November 3, 1964, United Sioux Tribes defeated a South Dakota statewide referendum for the state to assume jurisdiction over the Sioux tribes by implementing Public Law 83-280.  The United Sioux Tribes remained an ad-hoc confederation of tribes until May 19, 1970, when Sioux tribal leaders incorporated in South Dakota.  The board of directors reasoned that no tribe should have an unfair advantage over another tribe by chartering under any tribal jurisdiction. Today, we continue to advocate for tribes through economic development, science and technology, cultural and performing art events, environmentalism, historic preservation, and cultural resource management.
